A 17-year-old individual has been formally charged with attempted murder following an alleged violent incident at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Authorities in York County confirmed the charge stems from a fight that reportedly occurred on September 28 at the school. The unnamed teen is accused by law enforcement officials of attempting to strangle another student and subsequently stabbing that student multiple times.

Details surrounding the confrontation were provided by Rock Hill police. According to their account, during the course of the altercation, the 17-year-old suspect allegedly tried to use a charging cord to strangle the other student. This action was then reportedly followed by the teen using a pencil to repeatedly stab the student in the neck. Following the assault, police confirmed that the student who was attacked sustained a puncture wound. However, police officials explicitly stated that they did not provide details regarding the severity of the injuries incurred by the victim.

Upon arrival and investigation, officers successfully detained the 17-year-old suspect. During this detention process, police allegedly discovered a THC vape in the possession of the teen. Furthermore, while under police custody and detention, Rock Hill police reported concerning behavior from the individual. The teen reportedly issued threats toward the student he had allegedly attacked. In a further development, Rock Hill police also stated that the detained teen expressed a desire to harm himself during this period of custody.

The investigation by authorities also uncovered additional alleged actions by the 17-year-old. Police indicated that the teen caused damage to school property during the incident. Moreover, while being transported or held within a police vehicle, the 17-year-old "attempted to access items," as stated by law enforcement officials.

Following these events, the teen was transported to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. There, a juvenile summons was issued outlining the initial charges against him. These preliminary charges included assault and battery, possession of marijuana, and malicious injury to property. However, the legal proceedings took a significant turn when investigators reviewed the case.

The initial assault and battery charge was later upgraded by investigators to attempted murder, reflecting the serious nature of the alleged actions. Concurrently with this escalation, investigators explicitly noted that given the severity of the attempted murder charge, the 17-year-old would be charged as an adult. This decision moves the case from the juvenile justice system into the adult criminal court system, underscoring the gravity with which authorities are treating the alleged incident at Northwestern High School.
