The 2026 North Dakota Roughrider Cup concluded its competition on Sunday night in Mandan, drawing top rodeo talent to the city. The event featured the world's top 32 bareback competitors, who gathered to vie for a substantial prize pool totaling more than $500,000. These athletes were also competing with the immediate goal of advancing closer to the prestigious National Finals Rodeo.
Among the winners, three-time bareback world champion Tim O’Connell secured a significant victory in Mandan. However, O’Connell, a seasoned bareback rider from Zwingle, Iowa, announced that the Roughrider Cup would mark his final stop of the season. Despite his win, O’Connell stated he will not participate in this year’s National Finals Rodeo. His decision, he explained, is driven by a focus on preparing for the 2027 season, with the aim of qualifying for the NFR next year.
O’Connell’s choice comes after a challenging period involving two different groin surgeries over the past two years. These medical procedures led him to miss more than two full seasons of competition. Reflecting on his recovery, O’Connell indicated that his return to form was a gradual process. He described having to effectively relearn his body following his surgeries, a journey he said took him until June to fully navigate. In recent months, specifically over the “last month, the last six weeks,” O’Connell noted a significant positive shift in his performance and overall experience. He expressed gratitude for this improvement, stating that he “really found his passion for riding bucking horses all over again.”
Beyond the physical demands of the sport, O’Connell also cited personal considerations in his decision to step back from the competitive circuit for the remainder of the year. He admitted that the extended time spent with his wife and two children during his recovery made it more challenging to return to the demanding travel schedule he had maintained since 2010. O’Connell now plans to dedicate his time to rest and to physically prepare himself for the upcoming 2027 season. He also looks forward to an eventual return to compete in future Roughrider Cup events in Mandan.
His win in Mandan was notable, marked by a 90-point ride that secured his championship title. O’Connell commented on the satisfaction of his Mandan victory, indicating it was a perfect way to conclude his season and look ahead to 2027. This strong close to his 2026 season allows him to shift his focus toward a healthy and successful return in the following year.
