MANDAN – Hundreds of community members converged at Mandan High School Sunday night, participating in a candlelight vigil to express solidarity and support for the victims of a fatal car crash that occurred Friday night in Bismarck. The tragic incident resulted in at least one fatality, a 16-year-old girl from Mandan, and has reportedly left two other Mandan students in critical care.

The collision took place around 8:30 p.m. Friday at the intersection of West Main and Missouri Avenue in Bismarck. According to reports, a westbound car struck the passenger side of another vehicle that was in the process of turning left onto Missouri Avenue. The repercussions of this incident have deeply affected the local high school community and wider Mandan area.

The candlelight vigil, a significant gathering of collective grief and support, was organized by one of Mandan High School's sports teams. The event drew together friends, family, and concerned residents, all united in their desire to comfort those impacted by the tragedy. Beyond the organized vigil, the community has also established a memorial at the crash site itself, where individuals have been observed placing tributes and expressing their condolences.

In an effort to provide solace and comfort to the grieving community, Morton County Sheriff K-9 “Major” made an appearance at the vigil. Deputy David Tomlinson, who serves with the Morton County Sheriff’s Office and also functions as a school resource officer in the county, explained the thinking behind K-9 Major's presence. Tomlinson stated that "a lot of people tend to be happier when dogs or pets are around," highlighting the therapeutic effect animals can have during difficult times. He further affirmed the commitment of the Morton County Sheriff’s Office, noting that if providing K-9 Major's presence could assist the Mandan community during this tragedy, the department was "glad to do it." This gesture underscores the multifaceted role of local law enforcement, extending beyond immediate incident response to include community well-being and emotional support in times of crisis.

As the Mandan community continues to process the profound impact of this event and support the victims and their families, the investigation into the fatal crash remains active. Further information regarding the incident is anticipated to be released on Monday. Bismarck Source will continue to provide updates to residents of Burleigh and Morton counties as more details become available from authorities.
