Residents of Bismarck and Mandan who utilize the local library's digital services, including the popular Libby and Kanopy platforms, will encounter a new requirement when signing in, effective Wednesday, October 14, 2026. From this date forward, library users will be prompted to enter their library account PIN to gain access to these digital resources. This upcoming change is being implemented as an “added security step” aimed at safeguarding patrons' digital library accounts and ensuring the protection of their personal information. The library indicates this measure is a straightforward enhancement to existing security protocols.
Despite this modification to the login process, the library emphasizes that “not much is changing” for users of its digital offerings. Patrons will continue to interact with Libby and Kanopy in their accustomed manner, providing seamless access to a wide array of digital content. Libby remains the primary resource for borrowing eBooks and eAudiobooks, allowing individuals to enjoy reading and listening materials directly on their preferred devices. Similarly, Kanopy will continue to offer its extensive collection of streaming movies and diverse video content, ensuring entertainment and educational resources remain readily available. The core functionality and extensive catalogs of both platforms will not be altered by this security update.
The PIN required for accessing Libby and Kanopy is identical to the one currently used for managing one's library account online. This means patrons do not need to create a new password or remember a separate set of credentials for their digital services. For individuals who may have forgotten their PIN or require assistance with resetting it, the library has provided direct support channels. Patrons can reach out by calling the library at 701-355-1480 during operating hours for verbal assistance. Alternatively, individuals may choose to stop by the library in person to receive direct help from staff members, who are prepared to guide users through the process of retrieving or resetting their PIN to ensure continued access to digital materials.
Library officials stress that this security update will have no adverse effects on patrons' current library cards, their established borrowing privileges, or their overall access to the comprehensive suite of digital resources provided. The implementation of the PIN requirement is solely intended to introduce “an extra layer of security” to the digital library experience, enhancing user protection without diminishing service. The library’s digital collection, which includes ebooks, audiobooks, movies, TV series, and magazines, remains available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, accessible from any computer or mobile device, highlighting the convenience and continuous availability of these valuable resources to the community.
